Dr. Jean Carruthers
Dr. Jean Carruthers is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, specializing in facial cosmetic injectables, energy-based devices, and surgery. She earned her medical degree from UBC in 1971 and completed her Ophthalmology residency at the Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London in 1977. She furthered her studies at UBC and the University of California, San Francisco in 1982. Dr. Carruthers is a Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, with decades of leadership in academic and clinical excellence.
An internationally recognized speaker, Dr. Carruthers has delivered countless presentations on cosmetic surgery and has authored over 400 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters. Alongside her husband, dermatologist Dr. Alastair Carruthers, she has co-authored and edited nine textbooks, including the 5th editions of Procedures in Cosmetic Dermatology: Neuromodulators and Fillers, published in February 2023. She has received numerous accolades, including honorary memberships in the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and the American Academy of Dermatology, as well as prestigious awards such as the Eugene Van Scott Award, the Henry Baylis Lecture Award, and the Samuel J. Stegman Award—the latter marking her as the first non-dermatologist recipient. In 2020, she was named the Inaugural Champion for Change by Women in Ophthalmology. Dr. Carruthers’ pioneering work has been profiled in Best Doctors in Canada, The New York Times, Allure, Time, Newsweek, and Vogue.
